July 24, 2025

News, Press Release

OCN NI (Open College Network Northern Ireland) is an educational charity and awarding body that advances education by developing qualifications for adults and young people across Northern Ireland.

This year’s Learning Endeavour Awards ceremony marked a major milestone 30 years of supporting learners from all walks of life, including schools, apprenticeships, community champions, and inspiring tutors.

Caitlin Mullan a young person from Include Youth was recognised as Highly Commended for Essential Skills Learner of the Year a remarkable achievement that highlights both personal resilience and the impact of supportive youth programmes.

“It is a true honour to celebrate our young person as Include Youth’s OCN NI Learner of the Year. Like many others, she faced challenges that could have held her back but through hard work and self-belief, she has grown in both confidence and skill. Whether in the classroom, on placement or simply showing up on the tough days, she showed quiet strength and determination that inspired those around her. She is proof that when young people are given the right support and someone who believes in them, incredible things can happen. Today, we’re not just celebrating a certificate we’re celebrating a young woman who has overcome adversity with grace and who now stands as a role model for others. We are so proud of you, and this is only the beginning.”

— Nicole Dallas, Caitlin's Youth Worker

Out of all the nominations, this recognition stands out as a true testament to the young person’s growth and dedication. The award was presented by Kathleen O’Hare, Chair of the NI Skills Council. Both category winners and highly commended participants received learning bursaries to support their ongoing development.

“Our annual awards ceremony provides a platform to honour the dedication and hard work of individuals who have pursued vocational qualifications through OCN. The event serves as a testament to the transformative power of education in positively shaping lives and communities.”
