Overview of the conference
Across Europe and beyond there is a growing concern about the steady rise, linked to the economic recession, in the population of young people described as not in education, employment or training (NEET). Yet even during the years of economic growth the rising tide did not lift all boats and now those vulnerable and disadvantaged young people, who did not benefit from the boom times, are more distant than ever from the labour market.
The Northern Ireland Executive’s commitment to address this issue is articulated in its recently published Pathways to Success Strategy. But the big questions remain- what do these young people want and need? What works in helping them achieve this? Is it simply about slotting them in to a job or is it more than a job? What support opportunities, including education, training and employment are needed to ensure that they can lead lives based on public choice, dignity and respect?
This interactive conference brings together key stakeholders to explore these issues, drawing on both practical and policy experiences of what really makes a positive difference in these young people’s journeys into employment.
The Conference is free and includes lunch and refreshments.
